Our History & Foundation
Brief Overview
Arawa Secondary School was first established as high school in 1972, created to serve the children of Panguna Mine employees, public servants, and the local Nasio community. The school initially offered Grades 7 through 10, enrolling students who had passed community-level education and seeking town-school access to further studies. In 1989, the Bougainville Crisis forced the school’s closure, interrupting its mission and displacing many students. Nevertheless, during this time, community care centres and refugee-led learning efforts kept the spirit of education alive even amid conflict. By 1995, the school resumed operations, offering Grades 9 and 10 again. Over subsequent years the institution extended into Grades 11 and 12, an achievement made possible by the determined partnership of parents, community leaders, the school board and government authorities. Today, Arawa Secondary School stands renewed and thriving, proudly delivering full secondary education to students from across Bougainville.
